This kitchen was dark and dated.  By painting the perimeter cabinets and updating the hardware, we were able to reserve our budget for a large custom island with all the bells and whistles.  We also replaced a built-in desk with a wine fridge and bottle storage.  The formerly sage-green fireplace surround was painted white and a Samsung “The Frame” TV was placed over it as both art and entertainment.

The large-scale neutral porcelain tile was laid on the 45° to give the room a larger visual appearance.  A marble mosaic backsplash with a quatrefoil design circles the room.

Natural woven shades are layered behind long, terra cotta drapery with antique gold hardware that coordinates with the couple’s art deco art.  A large sculptural chandelier also adds to the art deco look.  The former dining area was converted to a reading nook with a traditional navy wool rug and large, comfortable leather club chairs.

The room was painted in a very soft yellow and the ceiling in a medium tone brown.  Overall, the room is much brighter and lighter, and is more functional for a family of multiple cooks.
